Bayfield is a beautiful village on the shores of Lake Huron - Ontario’s West Coast. Each June we bring a an array of fine Canadian vocal artists to perform in the historic and acoustically perfect Town Hall.
The Festival will run from June 2 to 10, 2012, and we have exciting events planned. Canada’s leading operatic soprano, Adrianne Pieczonka, will sing on Friday evening, June 8. This will be a true Celebrity Recital! Adrianne sings all over the world - Vienna, Berlin, Tokyo, Valencia (Spain), Toronto and Bayreuth are just some of her stops during the current season. For us, she will be singing a dazzling, varied programme with her partner, the fine mezzo-soprano Laura Tucker. On Thursday afternoon, June 7, a group of young singing students will have the tremendous experience of being coached by Adrianne in a masterclass.
On Saturday, June 3. Upstairs/Downstairs (remembering the long-time favourite TV show) will take a journey from 1900 through the Great War and into the Roaring Twenties, contrasting the art-songs and ballads performed in an English drawing-room with the rollicking entertainment of music-hall and ragtime which found favour below stairs. The versatile singers will include mezzo Megan Latham and baritone Geoffrey Sirett, both of them making welcome returns to the Bayfield Festival.
On Friday, June 9, baritone Alexander Dobson joins us in Recital. This versatile young baritone has already had a lengthy singing career, beginning at age 12 as a treble soloist in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem. He appears in opera and concert stages across Canada, and has also performed in England and France. Praised for both his musicality and dramatic awareness, he has appeared in operatic roles ranging from Wozzeck and Marcello in La bohème to Don Giovanni and Papageno. We know he will be a welcome guest in Bayfield!
We will again present our Saturday morning Coffee Concerts, and also a special programme in honour of the Royal Jubilee. On each Sunday afternoon, June 3 and June 10, four exceptionally talented young singers will join us in Diamonds for a Queen, celebrating sixty years of the present reign, soon to rival Queen Victoria’s in length! Watch out for some surprising historical notes and stories, with rarely heard songs as well as more familiar music.
We look forward enormously to your joining us in June. Watch for full details on this page in the New Year. Booking opens late in February on line, at our Toronto box office (416.735.7982) and at the Village Bookshop, Bayfield (519.565.5600).
