A Christmas Party – November 30, 1986 | Walter Hall, Toronto
Songs in German and English (and other music) on the theme of Christmas.

date: November 30, 1986

We began with Christmas music from Germany, spanning three centuries and climaxing in Schoenberg’s wonderful Weihnachtsmusik, which ingeniously combines Es ist ein’ Ros’ with Stille Nacht; the first half ended with English and American music, together with a reading of a famous poem of Thomas Hardy, “The Oxen”.  Our second half featured excerpts from Britten’s early operetta, Paul Bunyan, performed in the composer-sanctioned version with 2 piano accompaniment, finishing with the “Christmas Party” scene.  13 singers took part, together with the Dean of the Faculty of Music, Carl Morey, in the speaking role of Bunyan himself.  A lively concert staging was devised by Michael Patrick Albano.
