A Nordic Serenade – November 24, 1983 | Holy Trinity Church, Eaton Centre, Toronto
Music by Edvard Grieg and Percy Grainger

date: November 24, 1983

Percy Grainger first met Edvard Grieg in 1906, just a year before the latter’s death; but each had heard tell of the other and was eager for the meeting. A close bond grew up over the next few months, until Grieg’s death. Although he lived for another 54 years, Grainger never forgot the Norwegian. At the top of all of his folksong settings, he inscribed: “Lovingly and reverently dedicated to the memory of Edvard Grieg”. Our concert presented some of Grieg’s best-known songs, but concentrated more on Grainger’s extraordinary originality, including his crucial work in collecting and arranging folksongs.  An early version of the programme, performed by the Artistic Directors as a Hart House Sunday Concert in 1981, predated the Aldeburgh Connection.  The concert finally made its way into the Walter Hall Sunday Series in January 2000.  (On the present occasion in 1983, the various two-piano pieces included on the other dates had to be omitted because of the unavailability of Bruce Ubukata.)
