A Poulenc Soirée | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
A centenary celebration of Francis Poulenc

date: January 29, 1999

This was the first of two concerts taking place over one weekend to celebrate the hundredth birthday (January 31) of Francis Poulenc.  In association with CBC Radio, we presented two singers and fourteen instrumentalists in a sequence of solo songs, chamber music and some of the rarely heard vocal works with instrumental ensemble, notable the efferverscent Le Bal masqué.  We also included some of the incidental music written for stage plays, including the haunting Les Chemins de l’amour.  In the intermission, our composer was toasted in champagne, courtesy of the Consulate General of France, while students of the University of Toronto’s Opera Division danced to some of the popular music Poulenc enjoyed  –  what he called ‘adorable mauvaise musique’  –  in recordings by Josephine Baker, Tino Rossi and Maurice Chevalier.
