A Russian Song Recital: Joanne Kolomyjec and Mark Pedrotti | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
Songs by Russian composers and a Russian song-cycle by Benjamin Britten

date: May 9, 1995

Two superbly equipped singers, both successful on the operatic stage, joined us for a recital of songs by Russian composers of the Romantic era together with two 20th century masterpieces, both settings of the poetry of Alexander Pushkin. The second half, which balanced Shostakovich’s early Pushkin romances with Britten’s late cycle, The Poet’s Echo (composed for Galina Vishnevskaya), made a powerful effect. As an encore, the final duet from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin raised the artists to a high level of dramatic expression.
