A Winter Schubertiad – 3rd Greta Kraus Schubertiad | Walter Hall, Toronto
Songs by Schubert on the theme of winter

date: January 28, 2001

Our third Greta Kraus Schubertiad, celebrating our beloved friend and mentor, was the first to be performed in Walter Hall on a Sunday afternoon, rather than in the evening in the Glenn Gould Studio.  Our songs were divided between three talented soloists, interspersed with reminiscences by Schubert’s friends as collected by Otto Erich Deutsch.  The theme of ‘winter’ provided plenty of repertoire choices, beginning with Der Lindenbaum from Winterreise.  Other pleasurable or sad aspects of the season were invoked, until we ended with the hope of spring, with Frühlingstraum and Ganymed.  The encore, a drinking song heard earlier in the afternoon, drew us all together in a convivial spirit.
