This programme, originally presented in 1987, featured settings of Burns’s poetry by a varied cross-section of composers: English, Scottish, German, Austrian and French. He was one of the most popular poets of the 19th century and achieved a reputation right across Europe. Our presentation centred around Burns’s own words, from letters and diaries, read by the distinguished actor Andrew Gillies. A prominent musical aspect of the concert was the performance of a number of settings of Scottish folksongs, with Burns’s poetry, by Haydn and Beethoven. These required the addition of violin and cello to our roster. The final item, Auld lang syne, was taken up by a bagpiper placed at the back of the hall, whose rousing tones accompanied the audience as they left.
