Cecilia’s Child | Walter Hall, Toronto
Music of Benjamin Britten

date: November 24, 1991

The four concerts of our tenth anniversary season, 1991/92, presented the vocal music which we felt was most important to us:  that of Britten, Schubert, Fauré and Canadian composers.  This first programme’s first half consisted of a survey of our signature composer’s song output, concentrating on the earlier years up until Winter Words of 1953.  We also included a rare performance of a piece for two pianos, Lullaby for a Retired Colonel.  Britten’s birthday was November 22, St. Cecilia’s Day, so we framed the songs by reading excerpts from W.H.Auden’s Hymn to St. Cecilia.  The second half was a revival of Michael Patrick Albano’s concert staging of substantial excerpts from Britten’s operetta Paul Bunyan, originally programmed by us in 1986.
