Das Lied im Grünen | Walter Hall, Toronto
Song in the greenwood

date: May 5, 1991

Our title was taken from one of Schubert’s most joyful pastoral songs which opened the second half. The afternoon’s repertoire consisted entirely of songs by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf, written in an era when our modern dangers to the natural world were unknown. Partsongs by Schumann and Brahms were a particular feature. Spoken material came mostly from 19th century English, American and Canadian prose and verse, but the lyricism of the music was countered to great effect by an excerpt from Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, presenting a moral of warning towards the end of the programme.
