Our concert attempted to provide an overview of the almost incredible contribution made by the poetry of Heine to the art-song repertoire – according to the Heine Institute in Düsseldorf, a total of 6,533 compositions. In our programme, the earliest (by Loewe) dated from the 1820s and was followed by settings by the great Lieder composers: Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms. More unusual examples were in French, Italian, Russian and English translations, while other rarely-heard music came in the form of settings for male-voice ensemble by Schumann, Mendelssohn and Cornelius. Heine’s own autobiographical words, detailing his unpredictable and ultimately tragic life, were read by Andrew Gillies.
