Masques et bergamasques | Walter Hall, Toronto
Musical ensembles for a salon by Hahn and Fauré

date: December 3, 2006

This concert was inspired by stories of the musical performances which took place in Parisian salons around the turn of the 19th century.  Two works, rarely performed in complete form, took up the majority of the afternoon.  After a group of Hahn’s solo songs and some excerpts from Le Bal de Béatrice d’Este, we presented a complete performance of his Etudes latines, a cycle rarely heard because of its unusual demands: two solo singers, mixed chorus and piano-duet (the latter in just one song).  An attempt to evoke the world of classical Rome gave rise to a kind of neo-classical style, an idiom which also (though now based on the 18th century) underlies Fauré’s Masques et bergamasques, our second half.  Although written for the opera house at Monte Carlo, the work does very well in chamber dimensions, particularly as we were able to use the composer’s own piano-duet versions of the orchestral numbers.  Sections of René Fauchois’s spoken dialogue (in Watteau-esque style) provided continuity  –  we were exceedingly grateful to Graham Johnson for providing a copy of the original libretto.
