Metamorphoses | MacMillan Theatre, Toronto
Music to celebrate the 2,000th anniversary of Ovid's Metamorphoses

date: March 13, 2005

Alison Mackay and David Fallis (of Tafelmusik and the Toronto Consort) curated the city-wide Metamorphosis Festival, celebrating the 2,000th anniversary of the collection of classical legends, the Metamorphoses, by the Roman poet, Ovid. Over 30 visual and performing arts groups took part and we were proud to be included.  Unusually, we performed on the stage of MacMillan Theatre, where the Opera School had just finished a run of Handel’s Semele, whose story was drawn from Ovid.  There was much to choose from:  Jennie Such and Colin Ainsworth performed a number of Schubert songs and other music by Wolf, Poulenc and English composers, crucial among which was the complete sequence of Britten’s Metamorphoses for oboe solo performed by the Toronto Symphony’s Cary Ebli.  At the centre of the programme was a new work, a song-cycle commissioned from Derek Holman, The Death of Orpheus.
