Miroir Brûlant – December 2, 2007 | Walter Hall, Toronto
The songs of Francis Poulenc

date: December 2, 2007

Two themes guided the choice and ordering of the songs in our concert: firstly, the idea of Francis Poulenc as “le moine et le voyou”  –  the monk and the ragamuffin  –  and, secondly, the well-documented recital partnership with the distinguished baritone, Pierre Bernac.  This latter reminds us very much of the performing career of Britten and Pears, especially in the aspect of the singer inspiring new songs from the composer-pianist.  The narrative aspect of the afternoon benefitted greatly from the wealth of biographical material now available, particularly the musical writings and the correspondence of both Poulenc and Bernac.  This concert was first performed for the composer’s centenary in January, 1999.
