Music for the Masseys | Walter Hall, Toronto
Music in the history of a distinguished Canadian family

date: April 28, 2002

2002 marked two hundred years since the emigration from the United States to Ontario of Daniel Massey (1776-1832) and his family.  It was also the fiftieth anniversary of the appointment of Vincent Massey as the first Canadian-born Governor General.  It was an appropriate time to celebrate the contributions of this distinguished family to the cultural life of the country.  They were, themselves, no more musical than any other prosperous 19th century family; but their energy and generosity left us with Massey Hall, Hart House and Massey College, all significant havens for musical activity.  Our concert visited the earliest days of the Canadian family, with their devout Methodism and strong roots in the countryside, through to the artistic results of their turn-of-the-century philanthropy.  At the centre of the programme, we were proud to present the first performance of a fine new song-cycle by Derek Holman, The Heart Mislaid, settings of poetry by a former Senior Fellow of Massey College, Douglas LePan.  We were also honoured that the Master of Massey College, John Fraser, joined us as narrator.
