The songs of two noble Englishmen: Sir Hubert Parry and Lord Berners

date: August 1, 1988

This programme, first performed in March 1985, draws together the music of two noble Englishmen. First of all, Sir Hubert Parry, created a baronet by Edward VII in 1903: the first half of our concert presented songs from his English Lyrics, together with some examples of his piano music. Extracts from his diaries provided our narrative links. In our second half, we programmed songs by Lord Berners, born of an ancient line of English peers. Stravinsky and Debussy hailed him as a significant composer, but his slender output made little effect on the development of English music. However, taken in conjunction with his autobiographical novels, his songs and piano music show us a vibrant period during which Berners related to many other artistic figures of the time. Originally presented in Walter Hall in March, 1985, this programme was now revived as one of the Monday night concerts at the Shaw Festival.
