Already well-launched on what was to be a starry career as one of Canada’s foremost operatic divas, Adrianne Pieczonka provided a generous recital of songs by some of her favourite composers – Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss – alongside the rare Walzergesänge of Zemlinsky. In her second half, she gave the first performance of John Greer’s Allegory of Sweet Desire (after Agnolo Bronzino), settings of classical Greek and Latin love poetry in English translation. This cycle was commissioned for her and, in 2008, a fine recording by the same artists was released on our CD “Our Own Songs”.
