Recital: Colin Ainsworth | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
A recital of English songs

date: January 14, 2004

A brilliant young tenor, still at the beginning of what would develop into a flourishing career, presented a programme of English songs, spanning nearly 350 years from Henry Purcell to Derek Holman.  Three substantial and highly contrasted works sat at the centre:  Quilter’s To Julia (rarely heard complete, with its two tiny pieces for piano solo), Britten’s 1st Canticle My beloved is mine and Holman’s cycle to poems by Douglas LePan, The Heart Mislaid, written for Ainsworth and Ralls in 2002 to a commission from the Aldeburgh Connection (through the assistance of the Laidlaw Foundation).
