Recital: Gerald Finley – October 14, 1994 | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
Songs and song-cycles in English

date: October 14, 1994

This was the Toronto recital debut of the Canadian baritone who had previously performed with us in our Sunday Series in 1992 and at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1988 and whose career was shortly to take off into worldwide success, both in opera and in concert.  His programme for us was entirely of songs in English, beginning with Purcell and continuing with Vaughan Williams’s great song-cycle.  Warlock songs (with a few piano-duets) completed the first half.  Derek Holman’s “The Centred Passion” was the highlight of the second half.  The cycles by Vaughan Williams and Holman, together with Britten folksong arrangements, were subsequently recorded by the CBC for CD release.
