Songs and song-cycles in English, French, German and Spanish

James Westman, one of the busiest of Canada’s young operatic baritones, presented a varied recital for us. He programmed two of his favourite song-cycles, Finzi’s Let us Garlands Bring and Butterworth’s Bredon Hill and other songs, together with settings of French and German poets by Debussy and Wolf. Some great rarities came at the end of the evening in the form of three zarzuela songs; finally, three encores were enthusiastically received, including Mr Westman’s operatic calling-card, Verdi’s Di Provenza.
