Recital: Norine Burgess and Michael Schade | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
Songs and duets for mezzo-soprano and tenor, by German and French composers

date: October 10, 1995

The husband-and-wife team of two of Canada’s most versatile operatic soloists provided a varied programme, ranging from Mendelssohn, through Schumann and Brahms to Debussy and Ravel. An exciting conclusion was provided by the Chabrier Duo, a piece rarely performed in concert because of its rather outrageous vocal demands: both voices are severely taxed and the tenor is asked for several high Ds and some extravagant yodelling. Moreover, the music itself proved very difficult to obtain; after an initially fruitless search, our good friend Françoise Sutton very kindly visited the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris and obtained a photocopy. Needless to say, our singers rose splendidly to all of the challenges.
