One of Canada’s most talented young mezzo-sopranos chose a varied programme of, mostly, very unfamiliar material. She began with four songs by Ignaz Brüll, a little-known contemporary of Brahms. After four favourites by the master and five by Mahler, the second half again moved into less charted territory. First, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of Stanford, then moved from Irish poetry to some translations of the Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, set by the American, John Alden Carpenter. Finally, a visit to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland brought us some of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser’s folksong arrangements, once the staples of any self-respecting British singer but now, alas, rarely heard.
