Remembering Gerald Finzi | St. John's Church, Elora, ON
A centenary celebration of the songs of Gerald Finzi

date: April 28, 2001

We were always delighted to be able to present a concert more than once, especially on successive days, like this one.  Our friends of the Elora Festival Singers, with Noel Edison, were a wonderful enhancement of our Finzi centenary project; the majority of the music was performed by our two fine male soloists.  Despite his Italian surname (his Italian-Jewish ancestors moved to England in the 18th century), Finzi was the most English of composers.  Following in the tradition of Parry, Elgar and Vaughan Williams (and, further back, to Handel, Boyce and Stanley), he added his unerring skill as a word-setter, together with a fine poetic sensitivity.  Three quarters of his songs are settings of Thomas Hardy and, like Hardy, he retired quite early to the English countryside where he found his inspiration and developed a personal style immediately recognizable as his.  As well as solo songs, our concert included some of his choral music  –  notably the Seven Poems of Robert Bridges.
