Songs and partsongs of Schumann and Brahms

The courtship and marriage of Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck are well-documented, and therefore familiar to the musical public. What is less well-known is the story of the arrival of the young Johannes Brahms at the Schumann household in Düsseldorf at the crucial time just before the older composer’s suicide attempt. Despite his youth, Brahms sustained Clara through her darkest days and helped her back to a resumption of her concert career. She became lilke a second mother to him; her death in 1896 was followed only a few months later by his own. Our concert followed the details of these relationships, with excerpts from their diaries and letters. The selection of songs included a complete performance of Robert Schumann’s Spanische Liebeslieder.
