Schubert and Britten | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
Songs and duets by Schubert and Britten

date: May 8, 1997

Our large-scale celebration of the 200th birthday of Franz Schubert (see our concerts in January and February of this year) was succeeded, later in the season, by two concerts of music by two composers who fervently admired, even loved him:  Brahms and Britten.  This instalment included a sequence of Schubert songs divided between our two singers and including several which we specifically know were favourites of Britten and of his recital partner, Peter Pears, such as “Nachtstück”, “Im Frühling” and “Der blinde Knabe”.  The second half was dominated by a performance of Britten’s “Winter Words”, a cycle which must have owed its genesis, in large part, to the composer’s deep love and understanding of Schubert’s Winterreise.
