Schubert and the Esterházys: The 5th Greta Kraus Schubertiad | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
Music associated with Schubert's employment by, and friendship with, the Esterházy family beginning in 1818 and continuing until the end of his life

date: May 7, 2003

This concert was another in the series honouring our great mentor and friend, Greta Kraus (1907-98).  We chose as our theme the periods of time which Schubert spent with the Esterházy family  –  a distant, less wealthy, branch of the family who employed Joseph Haydn for many years.  These Esterházys had a summer residence at Zselíz, east of Vienna in Hungary (now in Slovakia).  In 1818, Schubert was employed for several weeks as a music tutor to the Count’s two teenage daughters.  He was also expected to provide musical entertainment for the family  –  a number of songs and piano-duets date from this time.  In 1824, Schubert returned to Zselíz more as a guest than an employee.  Another difference in the situation was that the two daughters had grown up.  It is possible that the composer fell in love with the younger, Caroline.  Whatever the truth of the situation, more fine music is associated with this second visit of Schubert to the countryside, including the large-scale Gebet.  (Co-Artistic Director Bruce Ubukata being taken ill a few weeks earlier, his place in piano-duets was kindly taken by Andrea Grant.)
