Schubert’s Birthday Party | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
A celebration of the 200th birthday of Franz Schubert

date: January 31, 1997

Our concert (under the patronage of the Austrian Ambassador) in honour of Schubert’s 200th birthday took over, not only the Glenn Gould Studio, but also the entire CBC Atrium where the party continued during the two intermissions. In the first and longer one, a Viennese banquet was served and the guests were entertained by Viennese dances performed by students of the University of Toronto’s Opera School to the accompaniment of Schubert’s music played by the Metro String Quartet and pianist Emily Hamper. Later, the composer himself “appeared” in the guise of our friend and box ofice manager, Jay Lambie. We were delighted that we were able to join forces with CBC producer, Neil Crory, who arranged the live broadcast across Canada of a dazzling array of musical talent. Together, we presented examples of all aspects of our great composer’s chamber music and songs.
