Schubert’s Florilegium: the 8th Greta Kraus Schubertiad | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
Songs - and some chamber music - stemming from the delight Schubert took in flowers and the countryside.

date: May 9, 2006

Our celebration in affectionate memory of our friend and mentor, Greta Kraus, had plenty of songs from which to select around our chosen subject.  Schubert was a man of the city and lived all his life in Vienna.  But he frequently travelled for short or longer spells in the countryside  –  we can read about these in letters or reminiscences by his friends  –  and found rest and refreshment there.  Poetry on floral subjects was plentiful in his day and he chose many of those texts for his songs.  Our concert (featuring two fine Schubertian singers) was noteworthy for including two longer pieces:  Viola, one of the composer’s longest songs, more of a continuous song-cycle, in fact (along the lines of Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte, which Schubert may have been consciously or unconsciously imitating), and the variations for flute and piano on Trockne Blumen which (performed by Susan Hoeppner and Robert Kortgaard) provided a brilliant end to the first half.
