Another in our series of celebrations of Schubert in memory of our dear friend and mentor, Greta Kraus, brought together a number of themes from the composer’s output. Solo songs performed by our distinguished baritone, Brett Polegato, began by focussing on the influence on Schubert of classical mythology; later, a group of settings of Ernst Schulze and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe rounded out the evening. Between these groups of songs, we were joined by the Elmer Iseler Singers under the baton of Lydia Adams. Varied partsongs included two psalm settings. One was the well-known 23rd Psalm but the other was the far from familiar setting of Psalm 92 in the original Hebrew, made for a newly-opened Viennese synagogue. The evening’s choral contributions concluded with the lively Cantata to celebrate the return to health of Irene Kiesewetter and, as an encore, Derek Holman’s arrangement of the beloved An die Musik.
