The Anniversary Waltz: Silver Jubilee Gala | MacMillan Theatre, Toronto
A concert of songs in three-quarter time to celebrate our 25th anniversary

date: February 18, 2007

In order to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the Aldeburgh Connection with the utmost joy, we chose a programme wholly in three-quarter time  –  almost entirely waltzes, but with some other pieces in three-quarter time in varying moods.  The concert was framed by Chabrier’s wonderful Trois valses romantiques for two pianos; in the first half, we presented a complete performance of Brahms’s first set of Liebeslieder-Walzer, sung by four fine soloists: Monica Whicher, Norine Burgess, Colin Ainsworth and Russell Braun.  In the second half, we introduced a number of surprise guests, all of whom delivered a special number: first of all tenor Benjamin Butterfield, who was succeeded by the stunning entrance of soprano Mary Lou Fallis, disguised as the muse of the dance, Terpsichore.  After her came baritone Mark Pedrotti, soprano Virginia Hatfield and mezzo Catherine Robbin.  The concert ended, inevitably, with a performance by the whole ensemble of The Anniversary Waltz, accompanied on two pianos and interspersed by as many quotations from famous waltzes as we could muster.  Dancing was contributed by six members of the University of Toronto’s Opera School:  Lucia Cesaroni, Eve-Lyn de la Haye, Laura Klassen, Jerod Bertram, Philip Kalmanovitch and Michael Uloth; Happy Birthday provided an uproarious encore.
