Our ideas started from one of our favourites books: The Savoy Cocktail Book. We came up with a very varied sequence of songs, some set in exotic lands, for the final performance of the 2nd annual Bayfield Festival of Song. There were solos, duets and ensembles for our young artists; the centrepiece was the cycle Liebesleid-Lieder, commissioned for our 20th anniversary in 2002 from composer John Greer, for four voices and piano-duet – “a modern answer to Brahms’s beloved Liebeslieder-Walzer”, in John’s own words.
