The Britten Canticles – March 25, 1996 | Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto
The five Canticles of Benjamin Britten, with some of his realisations of Henry Purcell

date: March 25, 1996

This concert prefaced the achievement of a major project – the recording of all of Britten’s Canticles, together with his realisations of Three Divine Hymns by Henry Purcell. (In order to balance the use of the three voices, this evening we omitted the third Purcell piece, Evening Hymn; to provide an encore, we took the liberty of arranging Britten’s realisation of Purcell’s Alleluia for the full ensemble.) Between March 27 and April 8, in the same venue and with the same artists, we recorded the music for a CD released by Marquis Classics later in the year. Its production was generously assisted by the Britten Estate Limited, the Ontario Arts Council, the J.P.Bickell Foundation, the Charles H.Ivey Foundation and by more than 50 individual supporters (our “Recording Angels”). After the concert, a reception upstairs in the CBC building said “thank you” to all of our donors.
