The Greta Kraus Centenary Schubertiad – the 9th Greta Kraus Schubertiad | Walter Hall, Toronto
A lively and varied Schubertian music-party

date: January 14, 2007

To commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of our beloved mentor and friend, Greta Kraus (1907-98), we presented a Schubertiad which included, perhaps, a rather more varied collection of genres than was our wont.  After a succession of some of the finest solo songs, we concluded the first half with Schubert’s greatest piano-duet, the Fantasie in F minor.  The second half was introduced by a male-voice chorus drawn from students at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music.  They also took part in the Szene aus Faust, a piece which is included in the volumes of solo songs, yet contains parts for Gretchen, Mephistopheles and a chorus of demons.  The programme proper concluded with another concerted piece, a beautiful duet with male chorus from the opera Fierrabras.  Finally came two encores, the well-known Marche militaire in D and then a drinking song in which the whole company joined.
