Voices of Spring – May 11, 1996 | St. John's Church, Elora, ON
Springtime and the natural world in German Romantic music and poetry

date: May 11, 1996

Our title was taken from the famous waltz by Johann Strauss II, Frühlingsstimmen, which we positioned as the final item. Springtime was the season which most seized the imagination of German Romantic poets and we programmed settings of their verse by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms for one or two voices or for choir, along with songs which used folk poetry (either genuine or faked). The second half, beginning with one of Moszkowski’s famous Spanish Dances for piano-duet, set the peasants a-dancing, along the way bringing in two of Elgar’s Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands. This concert, performed the next afternoon in Walter Hall, Toronto, was one of our frequent collaborations with the Elora Festival Singers and their conductor, Noel Edison.
