Winter Daydreams – July 8, 1987 | Alice Busch Opera Theater at the Glimmerglass Festival, Cooperstown, NY
The songs of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1840-93

date: July 8, 1987

Under the subtitle “A Study in Escapism” we combined, in the words of our preface, “songs by Tchaikovsky with episodes from his life which reveal some of his governing obsessions.  One might say that [his] life consisted of a series of attempted escapes  –  to a peaceful rural life, back into childhood and fairytale, abroad to foreign lands, even into marriage.”  The composer’s homosexuality was addressed, as was the unresolved question of his manner of death.  In this programme, we followed the plausible narrative of suicide, a theory which has received support from his biographer, David Brown; the truth will probably never be satisfactorily established.  The concert was first presented in our Walter Hall series in February 1987 and was now repeated at the Glimmerglass Festival, at which Mark Pedrotti was performing the role of Eugene Onegin;  under a new title, “The Lonely Heart”, it was performed at the Shaw Festival (August 1989) and the Guelph Spring Festival (May 1990).   Finally, it returned to Walter Hall in March 1993.  On each presentation, Tchaikovsky’s own words were evocatively read by our Honorary Patron, Christopher Newton.
