Music from a hundred years ago

One of the concerts of which we are particularly proud was, by its very nature, incapable of being repeated. March 13 was the birthday of Hugo Wolf and on that day in 1888 he composed Gebet and Verborgenheit, two of his best-loved songs. Our programme centred around the Mörike-Lieder, the Eichendorff-Lieder and the Goethe-Lieder, all from 1888; selections from these albums were surrounded by music from the same year by other European composers. Spoken material was taken from contemporary newpapers and journals and from the composers’ diaries and letters. The whole afternoon was dedicated to the much loved memory of Mrs George (Dolly) Bruce, grandmother of Bruce Ubukata. She was born on March 28, 1888 and died peacefully in her hundredth year.
