Young Artists Recital – October 19, 1999 | Walter Hall, Toronto
Songs and duets, with some complete English song-cycles

date: October 19, 1999

Virginia Hatfield and Matthew Leigh both have a particular fondness for the English song repertoire.  Their recital climaxed with an entirely English second half; it began with some 17th century duets which were followed by cycles by Finzi and Howells.  The first half was more varied:  Italian duets by Monteverdi and groups of songs by Schubert and Poulenc, ending with Poulenc’s only duet, Colloque, which is a duet in name only, since first one voice sings alone, then the other follows, equally alone  –  nonetheless, an expressive piece.
